I was supposed to take the kids out today, to the place where the river cuts through the desert and the wild horses run. We were going to dig up forgotten bones and search out the dried up husks of leaves and seed pods to later turn into what is going to be our summer project. Because our summer needs some magic, the kind you make by turning one thing into another and then turning that thing back out to the world.

But it’s 114 degrees and that kind of heat makes you lazy. So we went out to lunch and went swimming instead, which is its own sort of magic.
